Kobe Bryant's Helicopter Crash

Nancy K Gurish Kobe Bryant's tragic crash puts a pause on anything else that is going on in the world. It also puts other situations into perspective.

Other World Affairs

There are fires in Australia; and Brexit is happening in the United Kingdom; we have our impeachment trial in the United States; and all of these aweful situations, are emotionally put on hold at a time like this.

It is such a horrible thing that happened; and there are many families that are directly affected by the tragic helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on Sunday, January 26, 2020. ~`Fox News article

"I've got three small kids and I’m trying to figure out how to navigate life with three kids and no mom," he told the show in a phone call. ` Matt Mauser

Matt Mauser lost his wife, Christina in the Calabasas helicopter accident. Christina Mauser was a coach for the girl's basketball team.

Christina Mauser was hand-picked by Kobe Bryant to be an assistant coach and mentor for the girl's basketball team: the Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks. She was one of the 9 people killed in the helicopter crash on Sunday. ~`Mamba Sports Academy

Kobe said that Christina 'was exceptional', and that she made the girls, 'gritty and tough' on the court. She was dedicated to the girls.

All of the victims of this tragedy were close; they 'were a family' who really cared for each other. ~`Taken from the: New York Post

'Mothers, fathers, daughters, coaches,... 9 people were killed in the helicopter tragedy.'

Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna and 7 other people were killed in a tragic helicopter crash when they were headed to a tournament at the sports academy in Thousand Oaks, California.

What Happens To Pilots?

Something that I read about helped me to make sense of this; about why pilots lose their way while flying a plane or helicopter through fog.

In this crash just like other plane and helicopter crashes, the pilots are flying through fog.

I wondered exactly why a pilot can't right the craft, to navigate through the fog and out into clear conditions.

Spatial Disorientation

There is a spatial disorientation that occurs when pilots lose their direction, i.e. when the terrain becomes unclear.
The article I read said that their entire bodies lose the ability to help them to even understand that they have lost direction.

This helps me to make sense of why they can't right the craft's direction.

It works just as vertigo does. The body loses it's directional signal, the ability to locate up from down!

Timing And Speed

Just as with a car, when a vehicle or air craft is out of control, the time allotted to right itself is conditioned by it's speed.

In the last moments when this helicopter was still visible on radar, it's speed was recorded at 130 miles per hour.

An article I read said that when a pilot's disorientation happens, the 'life expenctancy of the pilot and the craft is 10 to 15 seconds'.

It happens that fast.

'A powerful tumbling sensation (vertigo) can be set up if the pilot moves his or her head too much during instrument flight. This is called the Coriolis illusion. Pilots are also susceptible to spatial disorientation during night flight over featureless terrain.'

A Warning System Alert

An air craft can have an automatic warning system, to alert a pilot that they are flying too close to land. It is not clear that this would have averted this crash; however that type of system can alert a person to help them to correct their direction, when their body's own directional signal becomes lost. ~`Kobe Bryant, Helicopter Lacked Recommended Safety Device

It is heartbreaking. This tragic accident is just heartbreaking for the families' and friends of the people who died. And for all of us.

My heart goes out to them: I will keep them in my thoughts and prayers in the days to come.

A Warning System

It is said that it will take months, to determine what caused this crash, however investigators may be recommending that helicopters carrying six or more passenger seats be equipped with a Terrain Awareness and Warning System, which would sound an alarm if an aircraft would be in danger of crashing.

A similar helicopter crash of a Sikorsky S-76A carrying workers to an offshore drilling ship, happened in the Gulf of Mexico near Galveston, Texas in 2004, which killed all 10 people on board. ~`The New York Times

Hospitals Providing Housing

A program called Better Health through Housing was launched in Chicago, Illinois in 2017 in order to help hospital's serve homeless patients in need. ~`read more: Hospitals Help The Homeless

By the way!
There are three particular subjects that I have been known to talk about more than any other.

This may be so because I have had great deal of experience in each of these three arenas!

On Another Note!

"I began to have panic attacks and a lot of anxiety! So - I have some thoughts to share about this. Through the years I have discovered that I also have Adult ADD. And Obsessive compulsive disorder. There were times when I knew that I didn't wish my life on my worst enemy~ But I have come out the other side! And that's what I have to share! ~`read more
