"...Cancer is the uncontrolled reproduction of cells in the body and the cells form a hard lump or tumor, which can then spread into other areas of the body. The exact reason why the cells do this is unknown; it is not understood why the cells are not receptive to the normal signal to stop reproducing.





There are four main categories of cancer:

  1)  Carcinomas - of the skin, mucus membranes, glands, and other organs.

  2) Leukemias - of the blood.

  3)  Sarcomas - of the muscles, connective tissues, and bones.


  4)  Lymphomas - of the lymphatic system.
Cancer causing factors include: cigarette smoke, free radicals, environmental factors (especially pesticides), stress, some viruses, and abnormal growth in Oncogenes - genes found in every human cell that have the ability to transform a normal cell into a cancerous cell.

"...(DES) is a synthetic form of the female hormone estrogen. It was prescribed to pregnant women between 1940 and 1971 to prevent miscarriage, premature labor, and related complications of pregnancy (1). The use of DES declined after studies in the 1950s showed that it was not effective in preventing these problems.


In 1971, researchers linked prenatal (before birth) DES exposure to a type of cancer of the cervix and vagina called clear cell adeno-carcinoma in a small group of women (2). Soon after, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified physicians throughout the country that DES should not be prescribed to pregnant women (3).
